One of the highlights of exploring Northumberland was hiking a beautiful section of the iconic Hadrian’s Wall, starting at Steel Rigg and making our way towards the famous Sycamore Gap. This spectacular walk takes you through some of the most dramatic scenery in northern England, with rolling hills, rugged crags and sweeping views across the surrounding countryside. Following the route of this remarkable Roman frontier, it was easy to imagine what life must have been like here nearly 2,000 years ago, when the wall marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire.
The trail has plenty of ups and downs, with stone steps and uneven paths, but the breathtaking views make every step worthwhile. Walking alongside the ancient stone wall, with the landscape stretching out in every direction, was a truly memorable experience. Reaching the area of Sycamore Gap was particularly special, as this iconic spot has long been one of the most recognisable sights along Hadrian’s Wall. Although the much-loved sycamore tree was sadly felled in 2023, the natural dip between the crags remains a beautiful and atmospheric place to visit.
This hike was a wonderful combination of history, nature and adventure, offering a real sense of the scale and significance of Hadrian’s Wall. With its dramatic scenery, fascinating Roman heritage and peaceful stretches of countryside, the Steel Rigg section is a must for anyone visiting Northumberland. It was a walk to remember, with stunning views and a lasting appreciation for this incredible piece of Britain’s history.
Afternoon feature exploring the beautiful countryside of County Durham, this time heading out to discover the impressive Hownsgill Viaduct and the fascinating old caves hidden in the surrounding landscape. The viaduct is an incredible sight, with its towering stone arches spanning the deep valley below. Originally built to carry the railway across the Hownsgill gorge, it stands as a reminder of the area’s rich industrial heritage and makes a striking landmark against the surrounding greenery.
One of the highlights of the day was exploring the old caves tucked away among the rocks. These intriguing hollows add a real sense of mystery to the landscape, and it was fascinating to look around and imagine how they might have been used in the past. The combination of rugged rock formations, hidden corners and traces of the area’s history made this part of the walk particularly interesting.
